History

In 1988 the S.S. Sicamous Restoration Society was formed as a non-profit Restoration Society with the mandate to restore the S.S. Sicamous for the City of Penticton. In the last 10 years the Society has taken this 1914 - 1937 CPR Sternwheeler from a virtual derelict to becoming very close to a completed Living Museum showing the importance of the S.S. Sicamous to the development of the transportation and economic growth of the Okanagan Valley on the first 35 years of this century.

Our mission statement is the following:

To restore the S.S. Sicamous, S.S. Naramata & S.S. Okanagan Stern Saloon with historical integrity and provide for visitors a meaningful heritage, cultural and educational experience.

Strategies for the Future – Year 2007

  1. Continue actively to promote the heritage of the S.S. Sicamous, S.S. Naramata and the S.S. Okanagan’s Stern Saloon to increase attendance and revenue
  2. Acquire, preserve, restore and protect and interpret fully the story of inland lake heritage transportation of the Okanagan Valley and to build public awareness of our secure artifact and archival recovery program
  3. Work conscientiously within the Society’s revised Mission Statement to reflect the ever-expanding work of the Society and identify the role, direction and governance that the Society should take over the next five years. This will enable the Society to develop operational directions and needs for the Society to continue its work.
  4. Continue significant restoration work on the S.S. Sicamous to work towards a goal of complete and final restoration by 2008 that includes the following:
    • Develop the Port-side Cargo Deck with interpretive story boarding and bulkheads
    • Construction of the “Dumb Waiter” from the Cargo Deck Galley to the Dining Room
    • . Create Stateroom #37 and various cabins to reflect their original designs and functions
    • Improve stateroom door stigma and continue to create interpretive sign age throughout the S.S. Sicamous
  5. To continue partnering with established alliances and memberships and to seek new partnerships with creative planning ideas that will see new corporate sponsorship opportunities
  6. To strengthen our newest alliance with the Enowkin Centre
  7. To initiate a Youth Program Coordinator training position to facilitate summer programming in conjunction with the Penticton Indian Band and the R.N. Atkinson Museum respectively
  8. Achieve an extensive advertising campaign and corporate partnerships to ensure long-term sponsorships and to promote the importance of our inland marine museums.
  9. Provide for the City of Penticton a safe, unique and attractive public rental facility for the local’s memorable occasions, small conventions and out-of-town private needs
  10. Present a heritage musical, S.S. Sicamous Follies Encore during the summer of 2007 on board the S.S. Sicamous and continue with the Mentorship Program and with continued dedication bring to life the true stories from our local community
  11. Phase I Planning Stage of the 1948 CN Tug #6 [Delivery of Tug to Park]. To begin donation and fundraising campaign spring of 2007
  12. Expedite First Phase Development of the Park’s exterior grounds in co-operation with the City of Penticton and the public sector with a vision to create a world-class Inland Marine Interpretive Centre and Living Museums
